architecture
Bahram Zarin-afsar’s point of view and architectural philosophy of self-sustainable architecture was published in INFOCUS: Architectural Review of AIA Orange County publication titled Self-Sustainable Architecture in Fall of 1996 issue. It is this Design approach that has been renamed Green Architecture today. Bahram’s architecture has been utilizing this design philosophy from the begining of his practice.
Self-Sustainable Architecture
We have neglected our buildings to the point that only mechanical equipments can keep them in operation. This neglect is abuse of our technical abilities in terms of creating an artificial environment and ignoring the natural resources that are abundant. Our disregard of alternatives for a quick and unhealthy solution affects us not only at the level of individual architectural project, but also at the level of towns, cities, and ultimately urban settings. Amongst possible solutions, the concept of sustainable architecture or environmental responsibility has been re-introduced, which is in the opinion of Bahram Zarin-afsar, the most philosophically and environmentally sound solution. Self-sustainability in architecture, is not an idea but a philosophy of a culture which reflectes one’s architectural theory based on the philosophy of life of a society. With this in mind, practicing architecture means obtaining a balance between philosophy and art in such a way that philosophy deals with the “truth” and art deals with “feeling and intuition”. The artistic abilities of the architect then aids in defining and redefining what is not the truth at the time of creation, but the architect’s perception of what could have been a philosophy. It is this philosophy that deals with the natural forces, local resources, materials and climate that produces a building that lives with nature and accommodates the needs of nature’s beings and humankind.
If globally accepted can become the sole international style that we have been striving to achieve.
